The M60A3 and M1 Abrams were the backbone of U.S. tank forces throughout the 1980s. The M60A3 evolved from the earlier M48 series first introduced in the 1950s, retaining a heavily robust cast hull design. It was powered by a supercharged, air-cooled diesel engine, delivering reliable performance in a wide range of battlefield conditions.
The turret was also constructed from cast steel and mounted a 105mm rifled main gun fitted with a thermal sleeve to reduce barrel distortion during sustained fire. At the time, the M60A3 represented a significant technological step forward, incorporating a laser-based rangefinder and an advanced ballistic computer system, greatly improving targeting accuracy and overall combat effectiveness. First entering production in 1978, approximately 3,600 units were built, and the type served in frontline and support roles for over two decades.
