Hangar 9 J-3 Cub 10cc ARF Introduction
With nearly 20,000 produced between 1938 and 1947, plus more than 5,000 still registered and flying today, the J-3 Cub remains one of the most influential and popular aircraft ever produced by Piper. It was originally designed to be a lightweight trainer that also led to clipped wing, Super, and Carbon Cub variants. The Hangar 9® J-3 Cub 10cc is a 1/5th scale replica of the original that offers a classic look and flying experience you can't get with other more modern Cub models. It features the advantages of lightweight, stiff, and strong wood construction that's covered with genuine UltraCote® film. Plus, it's available in an ARF version that allows you to install the glow, gas, or electric power system and electronics you prefer, or in a time and money-saving PNP version that's equipped with four factory-installed servos, a 4S to 6S compatible Spektrum™ Avian™ motor and a Smart ESC.
Hangar 9 J-3 Cub 10cc ARF Overview
The Hangar 9® J-3 Cub 10cc is an 82.5” (2.1m) span giant-scale replica of the aviation icon. It's designed to deliver the original's classic look and flying experience with modern-day features and conveniences, including a 2-piece wing and slots to hold the wing tube in the fuselage during storage and transport. The ARF version arrives mostly factory assembled and allows you to install a .62 4-stroke glow, 11cc 4-stroke gas, and other similar class engines or an equivalent electric power system and the electronics you prefer. The PNP version doesn't require any glue for assembly. It is equipped with four factory-installed digital and metal-geared Spektrum A6380 servos, a 4S to 6S compatible Avian 4260-480Kv outrunner motor, and a 70-amp Smart Lite ESC that can provide a variety of power system-related telemetry data with Smart and non-Smart batteries via compatible receivers and Spektrum AirWare equipped transmitters.
Both versions include scale-like landing gear with standard wheels and Cub hubcaps. You also have the option to install wheel pants or floats using the custom float strut set (all sold separately). The balsa and lite-ply airframe arrives factory-finished with genuine UltraCote® film covering and features a variety of scale details, including clear windows, wing struts, tall bracing wires, and more. And it all combines to deliver a classic Cub experience that's perfect for a wide range of intermediate to experienced pilots!
Skill Level 3 – Experience Required
Skill Level 3 aircraft, like this one, are suitable for more experienced RC pilots who already have the skills to assemble, set up and fly similar class models. This ARF version requires more experience and skills to assemble than the PNP version because you will need to select and install a suitable power system and electronics. You should have the experience and skills necessary to successfully fly models like the E-flite Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m, Turbo Timber SWS 2.0m, Carbon-Z Cessna 150T 2.1m, Carbon-Z Cub SS 2.1m, or other similar class models before attempting to fly the J-3 Cub 10cc.
Wood Airframe
The balsa and lite-ply airframe is lightweight yet stiff and strong. Best of all it arrives mostly factory-assembled and finished in genuine UltraCote film covering. The PNP version also includes durable, factory-installed metal-geared and digital Spektrum A6380 servos. And in the unfortunate event you damage any airframe parts or components and can't repair them, a full line of replacement/spare parts is readily available.
Almost-Ready-To-Fly Flexibility
This Almost-Ready-To-Fly (ARF) version arrives mostly factory-assembled and ready for you to install a .62 4-stroke glow, 11cc 4-stroke gas, and other similar class engines or an equivalent electric power system and the electronics you prefer.
Easy Assembly
The PNP version J-3 Cub 10cc arrives with a factory-installed power system and servos, and no glue is required for final assembly so it can be ready to fly within a few hours. The ARF version is mostly factory-assembled and is ready to fly after typical final assembly, power system, and electronics installation.
Scale Features
A large top hatch with windshield, transparent windows, plus seats and a pilot bust add to the scale looks along with wing struts, tail bracing wires, and other details.
Gear Options
Scale-like landing gear with fabric bungee covers and standard wheels with Cub hubcaps are included. You can also install the optional DU-BRO Treaded Lightweight Cub Wheels or the optional wheel pants when flying from paved and other smooth surfaces. Or you can install the optional silver-painted float (sold separately) and custom strut (sold separately) sets to fly at large ponds and lakes.
Wing Options
Optional “clipped” wings (sold separately) with a shorter 68.5” span are available to offer different handling and improved aerobatic capabilities. You also have the option to apply black “starburst” decals (sold separately) to the wings and tails.
